How we do business
RLI has no captive agents or producers.
Instead, we reach our end-use customers our policyholders through avenues already known to us. Most of our products are offered exclusively through wholesale brokers. Some are marketed through large producers who specialize in certain market segments, and a few via general agencies. Still others are served by retail agents. Each type of producer, as well as the policyholders, is an equally important RLI customer.

New opportunities
As a fundamentally innovative insurer, we are always
interested in profitable growth and welcome opportunities to
expand our portfolio of products. However, before contacting us
with an opportunity, please assess it against the following
factors:
- We are averse to giving away our underwriting or claims
pen and have very limited interest in working through
Managing General Agents or Managing General Underwriters.
- We are not licensed to write workers compensation
insurance.
- We generally are not interested in start up ventures where the
likelihood of success is uncertain. We have ample resources
of our own to develop new product concepts.
- We are very proud of the fact that our combined ratio is
consistently below 100%. We are not cash flow underwriters
and do not allow the potential of investment income to
influence our appetite for profitability.
- Our interest in new business opportunities is always directly
proportional to the quality and quantity of information
provided to us.
